Catch Basins

Catch basins are structures that collect and direct stormwater runoff from paved surfaces. They are made of concrete or metal and are built into the ground.

How they work

  1. Collect water: A grate or inlet pipe collects water and debris from the street.
  2. Trap debris: The grate traps large debris like leaves, sticks, and trash.
  3. Settle heavier materials: Heavier materials like sand, dirt, and leaves settle at the bottom of the basin.
  4. Direct water: When the water reaches a certain level, it flows out through an outlet pipe to a new location.

What they do

  • Prevent flooding: Catch basins prevent flooding by removing excess water and redirecting it to a nearby waterway.
  • Reduce pollution: Catch basins trap pollutants and reduce the amount of pollutants entering waterways.
  • Protect basements: Catch basins prevent downspout water from flooding basements.

Maintenance

  • Catch basins should be cleaned periodically to remove sediment, decaying organic material, and pollutants.
  • Avoid placing materials like chemicals, yard clippings, and fertilizers in the catch basin
